In 1974, a hot-headed 19 year old named Michael Peterson decided he wanted to make a name for himself and so, with a homemade sawn-off shotgun and a head full of dreams he attempted to rob a post office. Swiftly apprehended and originally sentenced to seven years in jail, Peterson has subsequently been behind bars for 34 years, 30 of which have been spent in solitary confinement. During that time, Michael Petersen, the boy, faded away and 'Charles Bronson,' his superstar alter ego, took center stage. Inside the mind of Bronson - a scathing indictment of celebrity culture.

Tom Hardy gives a truly Oscar winning performance as Michael Peterson, in fact I would go so far as to say it was Eastwood (Gran Torino) beating. Sadly for me though it was really only his performance that carried the movie along.<br/><br/>I freely admit that I didn&#39;t know much about the man before I saw this movie, but most of the film seemed to be Bronson beating prison guards up in various different locations &amp; not much more. I know he got re-married - where was this? OK he spent most of his life behind bars, but surely there was a bit more to the mans life than what we saw?<br/><br/>I&#39;ve read that Bronson was quite happy about this movie &amp; that it has given him some immortality, however I&#39;m not sure that it really is going to leave people with the impression of him that he thinks. I certainly didn&#39;t leave the cinema thinking of him as a &quot;billy the kid / Jessie James&quot; anti-hero, but instead pitied him as a lost, out of control man who knew nothing but violence - more of a tortured soul.
The film is excellent and another great performance from Tom Hardy. He is such an amazing actor!! His performance is gripping and should get your heart pounding as there are no points at all which are boring.<br/><br/>The theme music is also amazing.<br/><br/>Again, I am annoyed how it gets a metascore of 71/100 and how the &#39;Guardian&#39; review it. Do not listen to those completely rubbish reviews; this film is un missable!<br/><br/>I simply hate the reviews given by different people saying &#39;it is bad&#39; when quite frankly, it is completely the opposite. <br/><br/>If you have not seen it yet, you must watch it!!<br/><br/>Another thing, please note that this was a low budget film but it 100% deserves more recognition.
There are two Bronsons on display here: the impossible thug that we don’t dare release into polite society, and the guy we enjoy watching do his terrible thing. The man and the movie are both living, punching contradictions.
